## On this day in Liverpool FC history - 9th November

Farewell Crazy Horse
Red legend Emlyn Hughes died on this day last year, aged 57. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, and one FA Cup. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year.

Lawro gets the boot
Mark Lawrenson was sacked as Manager of basement club Peterborough United fifteen years ago today, after thirteen months in charge. He was replaced by Dave Booth, who immediately led them to promotion.

Happy birthday Jimmy
Short-lived Reds winger Jimmy Carter is forty today. He spent just nine months at Anfield after signing from Millwall for £800,000, making only eight appearances before leaving for Arsenal at a loss of £300,000.

Anfield trebles galore
Forward Joe Hewitt scored a hat-trick on this day in 1907, as we trounced Notts County 6-0, with William McPherson, Charlie Hewitt and Robert Robinson also on target. We also thumped them exactly half a century later, this time a division lower, with Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court, Billy Liddell and Antonio Rowley netting in a 4-0 win.

In 1946, Jack Balmer bagged a treble in our 3-0 win over Portsmouth, the first of three hat-tricks he netted in consecutive games. Seventeen years earlier, Henry Race scored all three goals in our defeat of Bolton Wanderers in another top-flight match. We also beat the Trotters in 1963, with Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan on target in our 2-1 win at Burnden Park.

Zico’s farewell...
Phil Neal played his 650th and final Reds game twenty years ago today, coming on for Steve McMahon as we won 3-0 in a First Division match at Coventry City. Jim Beglin, Paul Walsh and Ian Rush netted that day.

Joey off the mark...
Joey Jones bagged his first Reds goal as we beat Leicester City 5-1 in a First Division match at Anfield on this day in 1976, with Steve Heighway and John Toshack on the scoresheet, and Phil Neal and Kevin Keegan both converting penalties.

Brucie besmirched
A certain national rag printed allegations eleven years ago today that Bruce Grobbelaar had accepted bribes to throw games. He eventually successfully sued.

An Arsenal treble
Arsenal won for the third consecutive League season at Anfield on this day in 1974, this time 3-1. Ex-Gunner Ray Kennedy netted our consolation as they completed three of just eleven home League defeats we suffered throughout the whole of the 1970’s.

We also faced the Gunners on this day in 1988, holding them to a goalless draw in a League Cup Third Round replay at Highbury.

Larry fought the law
On this day in 1972, Larry Lloyd became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal. He was appealing his dismissal in the 2-0 win over Manchester City back in August.

200 for Ged...
We conceded our 200th goal under Gérard Houllier's sole charge three years ago today, as Jerzy Dudek dropped the ball at Middlesbrough to enable Gareth Southgate to score. This began our atrocious run that winter.

We also faced Boro exactly ninety years earlier, with Arthur Metcalf netting a brace in our 4-3 win at Ayresome Park. Tom Miller and Jack Parkinson were also on target.

Disappointment against the Mancs...
Manchester United won 2-1 at Anfield two years ago today, with Harry Kewell bagging our consolation following a Ryan Giggs brace.

Beating the Blues...
We beat Chelsea 3-1 at Anfield eleven years ago today with Neil Ruddock adding to a Robbie Fowler brace. We also beat them in a home top-flight fixture in 1968, with Ian Callaghan netting in a 2-1 win, and Tommy Smith scoring from the spot.

A European win...
We won 3-2 at Slovan Liberec five years ago today, to reach the Third Round of the UEFA Cup 4-2 on aggregate. Nick Barmby, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen were on target, with Heskey also striking an upright.

Deano for Wales again
Ex-Red Dean Saunders struck in his third consecutive game for Wales nine years ago today as they were thumped 7-1 by the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier in Eindhoven. Future Reds Markus Babbel and Paul Ince were both also in World Cup action that day.

Another thumping win
On this day in 1918, we beat Port Vale 4-0 in a home Wartime League meeting, thanks to goals from Green, Thomas Bennett and Harold Wadsworth.

Defenders off to Prenton Park
Six years ago today, ex-Red Gareth Roberts joined Tranmere Rovers from Greek side Panionos on a free transfer. He is still at Prenton Park, and is closing in on 300 senior appearances for Rovers. Exactly two years later, Alan Navarro joined Tranmere Rovers on loan. He struck twice in four games before signing permanently the following January. He has since moved on, and is currently with League Two side Macclesfield Town.

## On this day in Liverpool FC history - 10th November

Happy birthday Paddy
Patrik Berger is 32 today. He struck 35 times in 196 Reds games after his £3.25m capture from Borussia Dortmund following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic. However, he was later dogged by persistent knee trouble, and allowed to join Premiership new-boys Portsmouth on a free transfer two years ago. He is now with Aston Villa.

League Cup ends
Roy Evans took charge, jointly, of his last ever game as Reds boss seven years ago today, as we were beaten 3-1 at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur in a Fourth Round League Cup tie. Michael Owen netted our late consolation.

On this day in 1981, Kevin Sheedy struck his second and final Reds goal in our 4-1 defeat of Middlesbrough in a Third Round tie, with our other goals coming from Ian Rush and a David Johnson brace. Both Sheedy’s Reds goals had come in consecutive League Cup fixtures. We also entertained Boro in a League Cup fixture on this day last year, knocking the holders out 2-0 thanks to two late Neil Mellor goals, his first in front of the Kop, as we headed towards our tenth Final in the competition.

Anfield debutants
Jim Beglin made his Reds bow on this day in 1984, as we were held 1-1 by Southampton, with Ian Rush netting our goal. Outside-right Brian Jackson scored on his debut in 1951 as we drew another top-flight match 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers.

King Kenny’s international bow
Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish made his Scotland debut on this day in 1971, coming on as a substitute in their 1-0 win over Belgium at Pittodrie. He went on to win a total of 102 caps for his country. On the same day, Emlyn Hughes and Larry Lloyd both played as England were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland in another qualifier at Wembley.

An away debut...
Inside-left Davy Hannah debuted in our 3-1 defeat at Stoke on this day in 1894, with Neil Kerr grabbing our consolation.

Ton up Gary
Gary Ablett played his hundredth Reds game on this day in 1990 as we beat Luton Town 4-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush struck twice, to add to a Jan Mølby penalty and a goal from Peter Beardsley.

Despair at Leeds Road...
We have lost twice at Huddersfield Town in First Division meetings on this day in history. We were thumped 8-0 back in 1934, our second biggest ever defeat. We had lost 3-1 to the reigning champions eleven years earlier, with Harry Chambers netting our goal.

Thumping wins
We twice secured convincing First Division wins at Anfield at the beginning of the last century. In 1900, John Walker and Sam Raybould each netted twice as we beat Aston Villa 5-1, with Andy McGuigan also scoring. Six years later, Raybould again bagged a brace as Preston North End lost 6-1, with Bill McPherson and Alex Raisbeck also striking twice.

Spud’s international debut
Four years ago today, Danny Murphy became the 54th Liverpool player to represent the full England team when he debuted in a 1-1 friendly draw with Sweden at Old Trafford, coming on as a substitute for Nicky Butt. Murphy was joined by three fellow Reds, as Jamie Carragher played 85 minutes at left-back, Emile Heskey started alongside Kevin Phillips in attack and was replaced by Teddy Sheringham in the 58th minute, with Robbie Fowler coming on for Phillips at the same time. Robbie was winning his 22nd cap, and final one as a Reds player.

On the same day, Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer both appeared for the Czech Republic as they lost 1-0 in a World Cup play-off in Belgium. This left Baroš needing just one more cap at full international level before he could be granted a work permit to join the Reds.

First Irish caps
On this day in 1987, Mark Lawrenson won his 39th and final cap for the Republic of Ireland, skippering them as they thumped Israel 5-0 in a friendly at Dalymount Park. Ray Houghton won his thirteenth cap, and first one as a Reds player, while ex-Red Kevin Sheedy also played.

Jason McAteer won his first cap as a Sunderland player, and 44th in total, four years ago today as the Republic of Ireland beat Iran 2-0 in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off at Lansdowne Road. Future Red Steve Finnan and ex-Red Steve Staunton both also played. Dietmar Hamann, future Red Boudewijn Zenden and ex-Red Christian Ziege all also featured in internationals that day.

Honours even with the Mancs...
Ian St. John and Jimmy Melia struck as we shared the points with Manchester United at Old Trafford on this day in 1962, with Ronnie Moran netting a late penalty.

Cox for the League
Reds winger Jack Cox played for the Football League on this day in 1900, as they beat an Irish League side 4-2 in Belfast.

Clough for England
Nigel Clough netted his first England Under-21’s goal on this day in 1987 while winning his tenth cap. Fellow future Red Michael Thomas debuted in the same game, as England won 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Yugoslavia.

A final cap
Stéphane Henchoz won his last cap as a Hamburger SV player nine years ago today, as Switzerland were beaten 1-0 by Norway in a World Cup qualifier in Bern, with Øyvind Leonhardsen on the winning side. Also in qualifying action that day were Phil Babb, Patrik Berger, Jason McAteer, ex-Red Ronnie Rosenthal and future Reds Vladimír Šmicer and Rigobert Song.

Sean on the move
Ex-reserves forward Sean Friars signed for Carlisle United from Ipswich Town on a monthly contract four years ago today.

Our most recent game on this day was played in 1992, when we beat Sheffield United 3-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Third Round replay, thanks to a Steve McManaman brace and a Mike Marsh penalty. In fact our record on this day is very poor, as we have won just six of our sixteen fixtures.

SteG still a Red...
Steven Gerrard signed a new contract two years ago today to keep him at Anfield until 2007. He remains a Red, despite nearly joining Chelsea in both of the last two summers.

Crazy horse stabled

European defeat...
We lost 1-0 in the first leg of our Fairs Cup Second Round tie on this day in 1969, to Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal. We won the second leg 3-2, but went out on the away goals rule.

However, we lost there 3-2 eleven years later, with John Barnes netting a brace for the Reds, including one from the spot.

Disappointment against the Cockerels...
We twice played Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight on this day in the early part of the last century, without scoring a goal. We were beaten 2-0 at White Hart Lane on this day in 1911, and were held to a goalless draw at Anfield eleven years later.

Brucie in charge...
Bruce Grobbelaar was appointed Manager of South African side Umtata Bush Bucks on this day last year. He only spent four months there before resigning.

Mixed fortunes against the Mancs...
We have twice lost to Manchester United on this day in history. We went down 2-1 at Anfield on this day in 1967, with Roger Hunt grabbing our consolation. Five years later, we lost another top-flight meeting 2-0 at Old Trafford. However, future Reds boss Don Welsh scored a hat-trick as we won 5-2 in a Wartime League game at Maine Road on this day in 1944, with Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell also netting.

Quasi on the move
Peter Beardsley signed for Fulham from Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer seven years ago today, following two loan spells at Craven Cottage that year. He racked up a total of 28 appearances for them, scoring seven times.

Beating the Irish...
The Reds thumped an Irish Internationals side 5-1 at Anfield on this day in 1894. Frank Becton bagged a brace with Thomas ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw, Fred Geary and Jimmy Ross all also on the scoresheet.

Ged in chargeh
Gérard Houllier took over as sole Manager seven years ago today, with Roy Evans leaving after four years in the hot-seat. ## On this day in Liverpool FCl history - 14th November

Ged takes charge
Seven years ago today, Gérard Houllier took sole charge of a Reds game for the first time, as we lost 3-1 at home to Leeds United. Robbie Fowler’s penalty was cancelled out by three late Leeds goals in front of the Kop, including one from Alan Smith on his debut.

Happy birthdays
Israeli defender Avi Cohen is celebrating his 49th birthday today. He only made 24 appearances during his Anfield career, with his most memorable game coming in May 1980 as we clinched our twelfth League title. He put through his own net before scoring his only Reds goal at the same end in the second half, as we beat Aston Villa 4-1.

1960’s left-back Phil Ferns is 68 today. The local lad struck just once in 28 Reds games after signing on at Anfield in September 1957. He made enough appearances in 1963/64 top claim a League title medal but moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in August 1965.

Debutants galore
John Toshack made his Reds bow on this day in 1970, as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Coventry City. In 1953, right-back Don Campbell made his debut as we lost 3-2 at Sunderland, with Samuel Smyth scoring both our goals. We also played a First Division match at Roker Park on this day in 1931, with David Wright netting twice in our 3-1 win, and Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet. Half-back Willie Stevenson became our first ever European substitute, coming on for Tony Hateley in this game. Ian Callaghan grabbed our goal that evening to put us nine ahead on aggregate, with Tommy Smith rattling the bar late on.

World Cup goals
Future Red John Barnes netted a brace in England’s 8-0 demolition of Turkey in Istanbul on this day in 1984. Fellow future Red Mark Wright won his fourth full cap in the same game. Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson, Jan Mølby, Ian Rush and ex-Red Kevin Sheedy also played in qualifiers that same day.

Mixed fortunes in World Cup play-offs
Four years ago today, future Red Milan Baroš was sent off late on as the Czech Republic lost 1-0 to Belgium in Prague, as they fell at the final hurdle in qualifying for the World Cup in the far east. Vladimír Šmicer also played, while there was better news as Baroš had now played enough international games to make his work permit application to join the Reds likely to succeed. Dietmar Hamann and ex-Red Christian Ziege were more fortunate, as Germany beat the Ukraine 4-1 in Dortmund to reach the finals. Meanwhile, ex-Red Rigobert Song and future Red Fernando Morientes both featured in friendlies.

## On this day in Liverpool FC history - 15th November

Cumpleaños feliz
Josemi is 26 today. Rafael Benítez’s first signing, from Málaga for £2m in July 2004, has so far made 31 Reds appearances, mostly at right-back, and has yet to convince many Reds fans.

Have a rowdy birthday
Ron Yeats is 68 today. The giant Scottish centre-half played 454 times for the Reds, captaining us to two League titles, our first FA Cup and the Second Division title. He was one of Bill Shankly’s first and most inspired signings, arriving for just £30,000 from Dundee United in July 1961.

Half-back Neil McBain was born in Campbeltown, Argyllshire on this day in 1895. He was only at the club for less than a year, playing twelve times in 1928 after signing from St. Johnstone. He later managed Watford and Ayr United as well as coaching in Argentina.

On the move
Six years ago today, Stephen Wright was loaned to Crewe Alexandra for the second time, making seventeen appearances before returning to Anfield. On the same day, ex-Red Mark Walters joined Bristol Rovers from Swindon Town on a free transfer. He struck fourteen times in 96 Pirates games.

Future Reds winger Jimmy Carter signed as a professional for Crystal Palace on this day in 1983. He never made the first team, a fate that also befell him at Queens Park Rangers, his next club. Eight years later, ex-Reds reserve forward Mike Newell joined Blackburn Rovers from Everton in a £1.1m deal. He went on to net 48 times in 167 appearances for Rovers.

Technicolor Reds
Our 2-0 home win over West Ham United on this day in 1969 was the first game screened in colour by the BBC’s Match Of The Day. Chris Lawler and Bobby Graham scored the goals.

A treble against
Cliff Holton scored a hat-trick for Arsenal on this day in 1952, as they ran out 5-1 winners at Anfield. Jimmy Payne netted our goal, as early as the fifth minute. We had also been thumped 5-1 at Sunderland in another First Division fixture five years earlier, with Billy Liddell grabbing our consolation.

Thumping Wolves...
We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 in a top-flight meeting in L4 on this day in 1902, with George Livingstone, Jack Cox, Arthur Goddard and Sam Raybould all on the scoresheet inside the opening eleven minutes.

No longer the boss
Bill Shankly resigned as Manager of Workington fifty years ago today. He had been in charge for two years as they struggled in the Third Division North, winning 35 of their 87 League games under his leadership.

International debutants...
Ray Clemence and Kevin Keegan both made their senior England debuts on this day in 1972, as they beat Wales 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff. Emlyn Hughes and John Toshack both also played. Five years ago today, ex-Red Dominic Matteo won his first Scotland cap in their 2-0 home friendly defeat by Australia. Ex-Red Don Hutchison also featured. Three years earlier, future Red Dietmar Hamann netted on his full international debut as Germany beat South Africa 3-0 in a friendly in Düsseldorf. Fellow future Red Christian Ziege was also in the side.

First and last caps...
Ex-Red Ray Houghton was on target while winning his 73rd and final cap eight years ago today in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-1 World Cup play-off defeat in Belgium. Mark Kennedy made his seventeenth appearance, and final one as a Reds player, while ex-Red Steve Staunton also featured.

Three years later, David James won his first cap as an Aston Villa player, only his second to that point, as England lost 1-0 to Italy in a friendly in Turin. This was Peter Taylor’s only game in charge as England boss, and he also selected Nick Barmby, Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler and Emile Heskey. Dietmar Hamann, Stéphane Henchoz and Christian Ziege all also featured in friendlies that day.

International Reds on target galore...
El-Hadji Diouf scored the only goal of Senegal’s friendly with Ivory Coast in Dakar two years ago today, with Salif Diao also playing. Three years earlier, Steve Staunton grabbed his final Republic of Ireland goal while winning his last cap as a reds player, and 86th in total, as they beat Finland 3-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Future Red Steve Finnan bagged his first international goal, while ex-Red Jason McAteer and future Red Jari Litmanen also played.

Eight years ago today, Robbie Fowler was on target in England’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Cameroon at Wembley. Paul Ince skippered a side that also featured Steve McManaman, while the Africans included future Red Rigobert Song. John Aldridge grabbed a brace, including a penalty, on this day in 1989, his first goals for the Republic of Ireland while a Real Sociedad player. The Irish won their World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Malta, skippered by Ronnie Whelan, with Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-Red Kevin Sheedy all also in the side.

Future Red Patrik Berger scored in the Czech Republic’s 3-0 European Championship qualifying defeat of Luxembourg in Prague exactly a decade ago. Fellow future clubmate Vladimír Šmicer won his second cap in the same game, coming on as a substitute. Future Red Kenny Dalglish struck in Scotland’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Denmark at Hampden Park on this day in 1972.

Young future Reds on target...
Sami Hyypiä scored in the second of five consecutive games for Finland Under-21’s eleven years ago today, as they lost a friendly 2-1 in Germany. Two years ago today, Djibril Cissé netted a brace as France Under-21’s won the first leg of their European Championships play-off in Portugal 2-1. Alou Diarra and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both also played.

Eleven years ago today, Steve McManaman and Neil Ruddock both played their first full internationals as England beat Nigeria 1-0 at Wembley. It was to be Ruddock’s only full cap, while McManaman went on to win 37. John Barnes, Rob Jones and ex-Red Peter Beardsley all also played.

Future Red Michael Thomas made his England debut on this day in 1988, as they were held to a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Saudi Arabia. Peter Beardsley also featured. John Aldridge, Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all featured as the Republic of Ireland lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Spain on the same day.

Up against Rushie
We won 2-0 at Leeds United nine years ago today, thanks to goals from Neil Ruddock and Steve McManaman. We kept our first clean sheet in two months, while Ian Rush suffered his fourteenth game in a Leeds shirt without finding the net, and was booked to boot.

Thumping the Baggies...
Steve Nicol, Jan Mølby, Mark Lawrenson and Paul Walsh all netted as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a top-flight fixture twenty years ago today.

Jari at the double
Eleven years ago today, Ajax’s Jari Litmanen bagged a brace in Finland’s 5-0 European Championships qualifying thumping of the Faroe Islands in Helsinki. On the same day, Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his fortieth cap for Norway as they won 4-0 in Belarus in another qualifier, with Øyvind Leonhardsen winning his 35th cap, and first as a Wimbledon player.

Also on target in Euro ‘96 qualifiers that day were ex-Reds John Aldridge and Ronnie Rosenthal. Aldo struck as the Republic of Ireland won in Northern Ireland for the first time, 4-0 at the fourth attempt. Phil Babb, future Red Jason McAteer and ex-Reds Jim Magilton and Steve Staunton all also featured. Ronnie grabbed his first goal as a Tottenham Hotspur player in Israel’s 2-0 defeat of Azerbaijan in Turkey. Ian Rush, future Reds Patrik Berger, Stéphane Henchoz, Gary McAllister and ex-Red Dean Saunders all also played in qualifiers that day.

Final caps...

Sammy Lee and future Red John Barnes both also played. Six years earlier, John Toshack won his final cap as a Reds player, and 34th to date, as Wales won 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Czechoslovakia. Joey Jones was also in the side.

Eight years ago today, Brad Friedel won his 53rd cap for the USA, his final one while with Columbus Crew, as they beat El Salvador 5-2 in a World Cup qualifier in Foxboro. David James won his final cap as a West Ham United player, and his 21st in total, in England’s 3-2 friendly defeat by Denmark at Old Trafford six years later. Emile Heskey and Danny Murphy both also featured, while Jerzy Dudek also played in a friendly that day.

Off the mark
Mark Lawrenson nabbed a brace on this day in 1983, his first international goals as a Reds player, as the Republic of Ireland thrashed Malta 8-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Dalymount Park. Ex-Red Kevin Sheedy netted his first Irish goal in the same game. Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and ex-Reds Frank McGarvey and Joey Jones also played in qualifiers on the same day. ## On this day in Liverpool FC history - 17th November

Smiley happy birthday
Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was born in Northumberland on this day in 1896. He signed from North Shields Athletic in April 1915 and struck 151 times in 339 Reds games, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s. He was transferred to West Bromwich Albion in March 1928.

Sammy’s goalscoring debut
Sammy Lee scored on his England debut on this day in 1982, in a 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Greece. Phil Thompson was making his 42nd and final international appearance, while fellow clubmate Phil Neal also played. Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Graeme Souness and future Reds Michael Robinson and John Wark all also played in qualifiers that day.

Farewell Emlyn...
The funeral of Reds legend Emlyn Hughes was staged at Sheffield Cathedral on this day last year.

Three Anfield top-flight trebles
Kevin Keegan bagged a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we beat Ipswich Town 4-2 on this day in 1973, with Peter Cormack also on target. Eleven years earlier, Roger Hunt netted a treble as we thumped Leyton Orient 5-0. Willie Stevenson and Ian St. John were also on the scoresheet. On this day in 1934, legendary striker Gordon Hodgson scored one of his seventeen Reds hat-tricks as Leicester City were on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline. David Wright and Harold Taylor also scored.

Didi’s century
Dietmar Hamann played his hundredth Reds game four years ago today, as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Michael Owen’s early headed goal was cancelled out in the second half by a Matt Jansen strike, as we extended our unbeaten League run to eight games that season. We also faced Rovers forty years ago today, with Ian St. John bagging a brace in a 5-2 win, with Willie Stevenson scoring from the spot with Roger Hunt and Tommy Smith also on target.

First Anfield League derby
Everton paid their first League visit to Anfield as the away side on this day in 1894. Andrew Hannah and James Ross, with a last-minute equaliser, scored our goals in a 2-2 draw.

Thumping the Imps
Alan Arnell and Johnny Wheeler grabbed two goals apiece as we beat Lincoln City 4-0 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield on this day in 1956.

Mixed fortunes against the Owls
Sixty years ago today, Jack Balmer netted a brace as we beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 in a Wartime League match at Hillsborough, with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet. In 1900, we lost by the same score to The Wednesday at their old Owlerton ground in a top-flight meeting, with Alex Raisbeck and Sam Raybould on the scoresheet.

Tosh exits the Bernabeu again
John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Madrid for the second time six years ago today, after nine months in charge, eleven games into the new season. His new £22m signing Nicolas Anelka had not yet set La Liga alight.

International farewells...
Gérard Houllier took charge of his twelfth and final game as France Manager on this day in 1993 as they lost 2-1 to Bulgaria at the Parc des Princes to a last-minute goal. This defeat ensured that they missed out on the World Cup in the USA the following summer.

On the same day, Jim Magilton won his last cap as an Oxford United player, and eighteenth in all, as Northern Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by the Republic of Ireland at Windsor Park. Ex-Reds John Aldridge and Ray Houghton both played as the Republic qualified for the World Cup Finals. This was Billy Bingham’s last game as boss of the North. Also in action that day were future Reds Gary McAllister and Karlheinz Riedle.

Jamie Redknapp won his seventeenth and final cap for England six years ago today, with ex-Red Don Hutchison bagging the only goal of Scotland’s 1-0 win over Kevin Keegan’s England at Wembley, as the home side progressed to Euro 2000 from the play-offs 2-1 on aggregate. Michael Owen, future Red Emile Heskey and ex-Red Paul Ince all also featured. Brad Friedel and future Red Fernando Morientes were both in friendly action that day.

On this day last year...
Ex-Red Michael Owen moved into England’s all-time top twenty appearances ranking when he won his 66th cap in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Spain at his then club ground, the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Xabi Alonso and Jamie Carragher also featured in Spain’s 500th international fixture. Meanwhile, future Red Mark González won his first cap as an Albacete Balompié player in Chile’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Peru. It was his tenth international appearance to date. Milan Baroš, Salif Diao, El-Hadji Diouf, Jerzy Dudek and ex-Reds Jari Litmanen and Rigobert Song were all also in international action.

On target for their countries...
Robbie Fowler was on target for England Under-21’s twelve years ago today, in their 4-0 European Championships qualifying win in San Marino. He had also netted on his debut for the Under-18’s exactly a years earlier as they beat Switzerland 7-2 at Vale Park. On the same day, ex-Red Dean Saunders netted for Wales as they were beaten 2-1 by Romania in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff. Ian Rush partnered him up front. Meanwhile, future Red Paul Ince bagged a brace, his first goals for England, as they thumped San Marino 7-1 in Bologna, although results elsewhere led England to miss out on the Finals in America.

## On this day in Liverpool FC history - 18th November

Mickey’s treble
Michael Owen scored his first Reds hat-trick eight years ago today as we beat Grimsby Town 3-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Fourth Round tie.

Finland’s best
Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year three years ago today, retaining the award he had won the previous year. He has now won this award on five occasions.

An Anfield win
England beat Wales 3-1 at Anfield on this day in 1931 in the British International Championships. England’s goals were scored by Derby County’s Samuel Crooks, Jack Smith from Portsmouth and Leicester City’s Ernest Hine, with Walter Robbins of Cardiff City responding for the Welsh. Future Reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both featured for the home side.

Beating the Mancs...
A late penalty from Phil Neal was enough to see off Manchester City at Anfield on this day in 1978. We also sent Manchester United home without the First Division points on this day in 1911, with Jack Parkinson adding to a John Bovill brace in our 3-2 victory. Meanwhile, Willie Fagan bagged the only goal of our Wartime League meeting with United from the spot in 1939.

Twice against Villa and the Geordies...
We have twice entertained Aston Villa in the First Division on this day in history, without losing. We drew 3-3 back in 1899, when John Walker, Hugh Morgan and Alex Raisbeck were on the scoresheet. Donald Mackinlay, Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson struck in 1922 as we won 3-0. We won 2-0 at Newcastle United on this day in 1984, with Steve Nicol and John Wark netting. We had also beaten United in the top-flight at home twelve years earlier, with Peter Cormack, Alec Lindsay and John Toshack grabbing our goals as we won 3-2, despite Tommy Smith missing a penalty.

Derby despair...
Robbie Fowler netted our consolation very late on as we lost 2-1 at home to Everton exactly a decade ago through an Andrei Kanchelskis brace. Ex-Red Gary Ablett was carried off with knee ligament damage.

Oggy signs on
On this day in 1977, Steve Ogrizovic signed from Chesterfield for £70,000. He only made five first-team starts in five years at Anfield as understudy to Ray Clemence, sitting on the bench on a further 27 occasions. He had more luck at Coventry City, winning the FA Cup with them in 1987 and making more than 500 League appearances.

Corrigan’s day
Former Reds goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan is 57 today. He made nearly 600 appearances for Manchester City, as well as winning nine England caps. He spent ten years on our backroom staff before moving on last summer. He is now at West Bromwich Albion.

Finn to Fulham
Steve Finnan joined Kevin Keegan’s Fulham from Notts County for £600,000 seven years ago today. He went on to play 209 times for the Cottagers, winning First and Second Division League titles, to add to the Third Division he had won with County.

Reds on opposite sides
Seven years ago today, Patrik Berger and future Red Vladimír Šmicer both ran out at Wembley as England beat the Czech Republic 2-0 in a friendly. Robbie Fowler came on as a substitute. Meanwhile, Vegard Heggem and future Reds Stéphane Henchoz and Abel Xavier all also played in international friendlies. England’s Jack Balmer netted past future Reds keeper Cyril Sidlow as they beat Wales 3-2 in a Wartime international at the Racecourse Ground on this day in 1939.

First and last caps...
Dietmar Hamann won his first cap as a Newcastle United player, and thirteenth in total, seven years ago today. Germany were held to a 1-1 draw in their friendly against the Netherlands in Gelsenkirchen. On the same day, Jason McAteer won his 28th cap, and his final one as a Reds player, as the Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Yugoslavia. Steve Staunton also played.

Avi Cohen won his first cap in his second spell with Maccabi Tel-Aviv on this day in 1981, as Israel lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Northern Ireland. Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal, Ian Rush, Graeme Souness, Phil Thompson and ex-Reds Joey Jones and Kevin Keegan all also played in qualifiers that day.

Half century for Aldo...
Ex-Red John Aldridge had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside while winning his fiftieth cap on this day in 1992. The Republic of Ireland held Spain to a goalless draw in their World Cup qualifier in Seville. Ex-Reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton both also played. Ian Rush, ex-Reds Jim Magilton and Dean Saunders, and future Reds Paul Ince, Gary McAllister and Karlheinz Riedle all also featured in internationals that day.

Tosh exits the Bernabeu for the first time
John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Madrid on this day in 1990 on the back of three straight defeats, eleven games into the new season, having led them to the League title earlier that year. He returned to the Bernabeu in February 1999, lasting just nine months before being sacked again.

Young future Reds on target
Djibril Cissé struck two years ago today as France Under-21’s lost the second leg of their European Championships play-off game to Portugal 2-1 in Clemont-Ferrand. He was later dismissed, which led to him missing out on the senior Euro 2004 tournament. Alou Diarra and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both also featured. The tie ended level at 3-3 on aggregate, but Portugal won through 4-1 on penalties.

Leicester City’s Emile Heskey bagged a brace for England Under-18’s ten years ago today in their 6-2 European Championships qualifying defeat of Sweden in Kettering. Future Red David Hodgson struck his first goal for England Under-21’s on this day in 1980 as they thumped Switzerland 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Portman Road.

## On this day in Liverpool FC history - 21st November

Trebles away from home
Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick as we won 4-2 at Aston Villa seven years ago today, who were unbeaten in the first twelve games, after Paul Ince had opened the scoring. This was Gérard Houllier’s first win in sole charge. Villa’s Stan Collymore was sent off in the second half for striking out at Michael Owen, while Dion Dublin had a penalty saved by David James to deny him his hat-trick.

Five years earlier, Andy Cole bagged a treble as we lost 3-0 at Newcastle United. This was Torben Piechnik’s 24th and final Reds game, and only one of that season. This was later alleged to be one of the games ‘thrown’ by Bruce Grobbelaar. We had previously played the Geordies in the top flight way back in 1903, when a Dick Morris goal was enough to hand us victory at Anfield.

On this day in 1936, centre-forward Fred Howe netted a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Manchester United, with Alf Hanson and Harry Eastham also on the scoresheet.

A classic derby comeback
We came back from 2-0 down with twenty minutes remaining to win the Anfield derby on this day in 1970. An Alan Whittle lob and Joe Royle header put the reigning champions in a strong position, before a Steve Heighway belter brought us back into the game. John Toshack headed his first Reds goal in just his second game to level the match, before Chris Lawler won the game 3-2 with a shot that went in off the post.

A derby first
The other two derbies staged on this day ended less happily, with the Blues leaving Anfield with a goalless draw on this day in 1896. Alfred Milward was sent off for the visitors for charging John McCartney to become the only player to be sent off in a derby until Terry McDermott and Gary Stanley 83 years later. The game was described in the press at the time as “utterly unworthy of the best traditions of both organisations and never rose above the standard of mediocrity”. Eleven years ago today, on-loan Duncan Ferguson and Paul Rideout struck as we lost 2-0 at Goodison Park in what was Joe Royle’s first game in charge of the Blues.

Happy birthdays
Turn-of-the-century winger Jack Cox was born in Blackpool on this day in 1876. He signed from his hometown club in February 1898 and struck 81 times in 361 Reds games, helping us to two League titles and the Second Division championship in nine years at Anfield.

Ex-reserves midfielder Jamie Cassidy is 28 today. He never made the break-through to our first team, joining Cambridge United in July 1999, where he again struggled to make an impact, and was last seen playing for Northwich Victoria.

Winning seven goal thrillers...
We have twice won by the odd goal in seven at Anfield on this day in history. Back in 1931, Archie McPherson and Robert Done both scored from the spot as Manchester City went home without the points, with Gordon Hodgson and Done again also netting. 28 years later, Leyton Orient lost by the same score in our Second Division encounter, with Fred Morris bagging a brace and Jimmy Melia and Dave Hickson on target.

Off on loan
Reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves joined Norwich City on loan on this day in 1986. He made three appearances for the Canaries before returning to Anfield. Eleven years later, David Thompson joined First Division Swindon Town on loan. He played ten times for the Robins in his ten weeks at the County Ground, picking up four yellow cards.

Currency promoted
Four years ago today, ex-Reds defender Richard Money was installed as the new first team coach of Coventry City. He moved from being Director of the Sky Blues’ youth academy.

The prince departs
Paul Dalglish signed for Newcastle United on a free transfer eight years ago today. He only scored twice in just thirteen games for the Magpies, before joining Norwich City.

Scottish reds...
Tommy Younger played in Scotland’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Yugoslavia at Hampden Park on this day in 1956. 23 years later, Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Graeme Souness and future Red John Wark all appeared in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat in Belgium. On the same day, Steve Heighway and ex-Red Joey Jones also played in qualifiers.
